Fairfax County is located in northern Virginia and as of 2008 had a population over 1,015,000.  Fairfax was also the first county in the country to reach a median income of six figures.  Fairfax was settled and formed in 1742 and the oldest settlements within the county were along the Potomac River.  The growth of the government has allowed for the growth of what was a rural county into a bulging metropolis.  The county has a land amount of 407 square miles and is boarded on the north and southeast by the Potomac River.  
 
Fairfax County public schools offer enrollment in 139 Elementary Schools, 22 middle schools, 4 secondary schools, 21 high schools, 3 alternative high schools and 8 special education centers.  For a look at school by school profile, map, location and Program information please  choose from the menu below. 

Over 91% of students go on to some form of post secondary education and the dropout rate for 2006-2007 was just 1.67%.  In 2007, the average SAT score was 1639.  One particular school in the system is InformationThomas Jefferson High School for Science and TechnologyIn 2007, TJHSST was awarded the top ranking for best high schools in the United States by U.S. News and World Report.  In 2008, the school received the honor for the second year in a row.

In addition to elementary, middle and high schools, Fairfax County is also home to InformationGeorge Mason University and the InformationNorthern Virginia Community College

There are several major roads leading into and out of Fairfax County.  These include Interstates 495, 66, 95 and 395.  The area is also served by public transport.  Fairfax County is served by both the metro trains and the bus service.  The Blue, Orange, Yellow and planned Silver lines all serve Fairfax County.
